Frequently Asked Questions about Fred Astaire Dance Studios and learning to dance.
How do I get started?
We offer all new students a special Introductory Programme. Please call us about our current Introductory Offer.
What is the cost of lessons?
Prices will vary according to your needs. Dance lesson programmes are designed to fit each student’s specific interests and budget, and programmes are therefore priced accordingly.
What types of dance do you teach?
We offer both Rhythm/Latin American and Smooth/Ballroom dancing, including waltz, tango, and cha-cha, to swing and salsa dancing. We can help you with all your social dance needs, your wedding dance and any dance done with a partner.
Do I need a partner?
No you don’t. At Fred Astaire Dance Studio, we teach both singles and couples. As a single student, your instructor will be your partner for your private lessons. Our group classes and practice sessions allow plenty of opportunity to meet other students with the same interests and goals, and practice dancing with different partners.
In the beginning, we highly recommend that you schedule your lessons close together. This way, you will forget less between lessons. You will then start to learn more quickly and need to revise less. It is also most effective for you to take private lessons as well as attend group and practice sessions.
What is a private lesson?
Private lessons consist of one student or a couple working with one or two instructors. Private instruction is tailored to your personal needs, so that you learn at your own pace. This is the optimum method of learning and private instruction enforces this.
Private lessons do not take place in seclusion. Multiple private lessons are often taking place at the same time in our ballroom. Learning in this environment gives our students an advantage in social dance settings.
Private lessons are by appointment only, and may be scheduled during the studio’s normal business hours.
What is a group class?
Group classes are designed to be taken in conjunction with your private lessons. These consist of several students learning a specific dance together from one instructor. Group classes offer a wide variety of dances to better your technique, fitness levels, and understanding of ballroom dance. Students at any level can participate. Group classes are scheduled at various times in the evening throughout the week.
What is a practice session?
Our practice sessions are designed to prepare you for dancing socially. You have the opportunity to apply what you have learned in your private and group lessons. Our students attend to learn, have fun, and dance! Our practice sessions have a fabulous social and party type atmosphere. Students have the opportunity to dance and meet other students, as well as the other instructors.
Will my lessons be at the same time every week?
Not necessarily. We attempt to be as flexible as possible to accommodate your busy schedule but we aren’t always able to schedule the same time every week. In order to reserve your preferred times, we recommend that you schedule your lessons a few weeks in advance. Group Classes and Practice Sessions are normally a set time each week.
How should I dress for my lesson?
Wear something comfortable that won’t restrict your movement. Some students come straight from work in work attire while others come dressed casual. It’s up to you. Comfortable shoes are also recommended! We suggest a pair of leather-soled shoes for gentlemen and a shoe with a back for the ladies similar to what you would wear to go out dancing. Athletics shoes are not suitable for a ballroom floor as they stick and make it difficult to move your feet!
Is it difficult to learn to dance?
No. Our progressive teaching methods and our unique trophy system make it easy to learn. Our instructors are highly qualified and are always undergoing training. It does take time to learn the various dances and the extensive number of steps in our curriculum. However, the learning is simple and fun. A regular lesson plan with periodic practice will produce visible results in a short period. We encourage you to keep your lessons close together. You will progress more quickly, and make the experience more valuable to you.
